Buckeyes swept series in 1995-96

(*22*)Against Notre Dame, the Buckeyes went back to their most reliable weapon. Senior tailback and co-captain Eddie George rushed for 207 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries. Once again, the Heisman Trophy talk is at full volume for George, who now has 640 yards on 109 carries with six touchdowns.(*21*)
(*22*)“I really don’t know (about the Heisman),” George said. (*3*)(*21*)
(*22*)Hoying had another outstanding day passing as well. He completed 14 of 22 attempts for 272 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He completed passes of 51 yards to Buster Tillman and an 82-yarder to Terry Glenn, one of two touchdown catches for him.(*21*)
(*22*)(*5*) Hoying said. (*6*)(*21*)
(*22*)Glenn, coming off a school-record 253 yards receiving at Pitt, caught four passes for 128 yards against Notre Dame.(*21*)
(*22*)(*11*) Glenn said. “The crowd was really like a big factor in the ball game, the 12th man.”(*21*)
(*22*)John Cooper, in his eighth season as the OSU head coach, had bagged his biggest victory to date.(*21*)
(*22*)“I don’t know how much anybody out there paid for tickets today, but I guarantee they got their money’s worth,” said Cooper, who was nearly trampled before the game while trying to traverse the Tunnel of Pride. (*(*28*)*)(*21*)
(*22*)Notre Dame’s ground attack, keyed by Randy Kinder and Marc Edwards, pushed the Irish in front 17-7 midway through the second quarter.(*21*)
(*22*)OSU narrowed the lead to 17-14 at halftime after Hoying hooked up with Dimitrious Stanley on a 17-yard scoring strike with 44 seconds left in the half.(*21*)
(*22*)In a span of six minutes in the second half, OSU turned three ND turnovers into touchdowns.(*21*)
(*22*)Notre Dame muffed an OSU punt with long snapper Dean Kreuzer recovering it at the ND 19-yard line. On third-and-6 at the ND 15, Hoying hit tight end Rickey Dudley over the middle for the touchdown and a 21-20 lead with 5-06 left in the third quarter.(*21*)
(*22*)OSU’s Shawn Springs then intercepted a pass from ND’s Ron Powlus deep in OSU territory.(*21*)
(*22*)Glenn, OSU’s game breaking receiver then hit full stride, he caught a short pass from Hoying after his cover man, LaRon Moore, slipped. Glenn the accelerated away from ND’s Allen Rossum on an 82-yard touchdown that gave OSU a 28-20 lead with 1-20 left in the third.(*21*)
(*22*)(*14*) Glenn said. (*(*26*)*)(*21*)
(*22*)At this point, Ohio Stadium was at a near-fever pitch. But it went to another level after ND’s first play of the ensuing series. The Irish fumbled the center exchange and OSU co-captain and defensive tackle Matt Bonhaus recovered the fumble at the ND 14.(*21*)
(*22*)George took a pitch left and followed fullback Nicky Sualua and All-American left tackle Orlando Pace into the end zone on a 5-yard TD run that made it 35-20. George added a 3-yard TD run behind Pace for a 42-26 lead with 11-24 left. Josh Jackson’s 35-yard field goal capped the scoring.(*21*)
(*22*)Fans rushed the field as the final seconds ticked off and Ohio State had secured its first-ever win over Notre Dame.(*21*)
(*22*)(*12*) said Holtz, whose ND team fell to 3-(*26*) on the season. (*7*)(*21*)
