No. 2 Ohio State kicks off the 2022 season in less than a week when No. 5 Notre Dame comes to Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes come into this year off of one of the most disappointing seasons in recent memory, finishing 11-2 and winning the Rose Bowl, but failing to make the Big Ten Championship Game or the College Football Playoff after losing to rivals Michigan.
Despite that, the expectations are high for the Scarlet and Gray leading into the new year.
Ohio State has plenty of talent returning on the offensive side of the ball after ranking as one of the best statistical offenses in the country a year ago. Quarterback C.J. Stroud returns for his second season as a starter and has his top target from a year ago in (*11*)Jaxon Smith-Njigba back at wide receiver. Next to Stroud in the backfield is running back (*11*)TreVeyon Henderson. The Buckeyes return three of the five starting offensive linemen from a year ago, although (*11*)Paris Johnson Jr. moves from guard to tackle.
Defensively, there are also a number of familiar faces for the Scarlet and Gray, except when it comes to the coaching staff. Head coach (*11*)Ryan Day replaced three of his four defensive coaches, most notably (*11*)Jim Knowles who steps in as the team’s new defensive coordinator. Ohio State is a more experienced team defensively than at this time a year ago, with the likes of (*11*)Zach Harrison, J.T. Tuimoloau, (*11*)Jack Sawyer, (*11*)Tommy Eichenberg, (*11*)Steele Chambers, (*11*)Denzel Burke and (*11*)Ronnie Hickman all with a full season of contributions under their belt.
There are certainly reasons to be excited if you’re a Buckeye fan and it’s clear to see why expectations remain high for the Scarlet and Gray. Before the year gets underway, Bucknuts looked at some of the most interesting odds, all from Caesars Sportsbook, when it comes to Ohio State this season.
