In a movie universe as vast as the MCU, it’s not surprising that there are some so-called plotholes, small plot and storytelling details that don’t quite connect from movie to movie and from series to series. In some cases, these are less true “plot holes” than something not addressed in the narrative in question, but when it is a large element of Eternal, the lack of any recognition is starting to feel like a pretty big problem. Like, in the second episode of Disney+ She-Hulk: LawyerFans finally see the problem solved, albeit minimally.
Warning: Spoilers for the second episode of She-Hulk: Lawyer beyond this point.
At one point in this week’s episode, viewers catch a glimpse of a headline in an article displayed on Jennifer Walters’ (Tatiana Maslany) computer as she searches for a job. It’s an article about the strange celestial body sticking out of the water, something that has definitely made headlines in the rest of the world now, as might be expected. It’s not a very big moment or mention – it’s one of those things where you might miss out if you’re not paying attention – but it goes quite a distance to solve that “plot hole”.
As fans will remember Eternal, the film saw the titular team, themselves created by the heavenly Arishem and sent to Earth centuries ago to protect it from the deviants and help humanity evolve without engaging in human conflict. However, it is eventually revealed that the real reason for this was that the Eternals were really sent to prepare the earth for the birth of the heavenly Tiamut, who would literally destroy the earth by being born from it. The Eternals stop Tiamut’s birth/ascension and save the world, but not before the baby Celestial begins to appear. In the end, a partially emerged creature was sticking out of the ground — more specifically, its head and arm were sticking straight out of the middle of the ocean — and it’s a thing big enough for no one to miss seeing. It’s huge.
But despite the sheer size of this thing, no one has mentioned it since. There’s also no mention of Arishem showing up and simply taking The Eternals, but it’s those oddly protruding hands and arms that would really draw attention, but none of the movies or series have addressed that even minimally — at least not until now. Thanks to this week She HulkAt least we know someone actually noticed the Celestial poking out of the sea, and it’ll be interesting to see if this weird thing makes more appearances in future chapters of the MCU.
