It won’t take long for the 2022 college football season to find its groove in Columbus, Ohio or South Bend, Indiana. On Saturday night, Ohio State welcomes Notre Dame to Ohio Stadium. This game isn’t only between two top-five teams — the Buckeyes at No. 2 in the AP Poll while the Fighting Irish are No. 5 — but it’s also two of the most historic programs in the sport meeting in the regular season for the first time since 1996.

On Monday, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman held his first press conference of the new year to discuss the match up with his alma mater Scarlet and Gray. The full video of Freeman’s press conference is available to watch above, while the highlights of what he said in regards to Ohio State and this matchup are transcribed below.

(Ohio State head coach Ryan Day will have his press conference on Tuesday at 12 p.m. ET.)

FREMAN’S INTRODUCTION

“(*4*)Welcome obviously to our first opening press conference. Just a couple of things. Obviously, we’re extremely excited. Finally, we’re in game week. The opportunity to go and play a great team like Ohio State in, I’m sure it will be a hostile environment in Columbus, Ohio. Again, I’ve said this before, but any competitor wants this. You want an opportunity to go and play against the best. And there’s no better way to see where we’re at as a football team than to go and say, ‘Okay, let’s go play one of the best teams in the country and let’s see where we’re at.’ And so we’re excited.(*13*)

(*4*)”I really, really am pleased with the progress we’ve made as a team over these past three or four weeks of fall camp. They’ve done an unbelievable job as players, but our coaching staff. Our coaching staff has done a tremendous job of truly preparing our team at the beginning stages of trying to figure out who we are and our identity to now obviously in the past week, we’ve kinda turned our focus to Ohio State and our opponent. so I’m really pleased with our players and what they’ve done and our coaching staff and what they’ve done in terms of their preparation and their sacrifice.(*13*)
